Tank Setup and Environment

Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is required, though 75+ gallons is better to accommodate their 6–7 inch size and active swimming nature

Substrate: Sand or fine gravel is best, as they enjoy digging

Decor: Use plenty of rocks to create caves and hiding spots. They are territorial, so providing visual barriers helps reduce aggression.

Water Conditions: They require hard, alkaline water, with a pH of 7.5–8.5 and a temperature of 75°- 82°F

Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary, as they produce a significant amount of waste

Diet and Feeding

Diet: As carnivores, they should be fed a varied diet of high-protein foods, including frozen food (brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp), krill, and high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes.

Temperament and Tank Mates

Temperament: They are mildly to moderately aggressive, especially males defending territory

Compatibility: Best kept with other Haplochromines ("Haps") and Peacock cichlids of a similar size. Avoid mixing with overly aggressive Mbuna.

Maintenance and Breeding

Maintenance: Regular, large water changes are recommended to maintain water quality.

Breeding: They are maternal mouthbrooders. The male will choose a flat rock for spawning, and the female will carry the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch.
