Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a group of 5-7 adults, with larger tanks preferred for mixed-species setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 75-79°F (24-26°C) and a pH of 7.8-8.6.
Diet: Offer a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Tank Setup: Use a sandy substrate to allow for natural digging behavior. Include plenty of rocks and caves for hiding and territorial establishment.
Tank Mates: Choose tank mates that are also relatively peaceful Lake Malawi cichlids, such as Aulonocara (Peacock cichlids) or other Haplochromines.
Filtration: Provide efficient filtration to maintain good water quality.
Behavior and Appearance:
Otopharynx tetrastigma cichlids are known for their vibrant orange markings, especially on the dorsal fin, which become more prominent in males.
They are generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior during breeding.
Females are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning they carry their eggs and fry in their mouths for protection.
Additional Tips:
Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce aggression
