Otopharynx Lithobates (BOD)

Otopharynx lithobates (Black Orange Dorsal) requires a 55–75+ gallon tank, rock caves/crevices, and hard, alkaline water. As a maternal mouthbrooding, relatively peaceful (3/10 aggression) African cichlid, they thrive in groups (1 male/3-5 females). Feed them high-quality omnivore pellets, frozen brine shrimp, or spirulina.

Key Care Requirements:

Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a single male/harem, 75+ gallons for larger groups.

Water Conditions: Temperature 76-82°f pH 7.8–8.6, and 10–20 dGH hardness.

Habitat: Use sand substrate with extensive rock formations, caves, and crevices for security.

Diet: Primarily omnivorous. Provide high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live food like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or spirulina.

Tank Mates: Best kept with other peaceful to moderately aggressive Lake Malawi Haps and Peacocks. Avoid highly aggressive Mbuna.

Behavior: Generally peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, but territorial during breeding. They are known to be relatively slow-growing.

Maintenance: Perform 20%–30% water changes monthly, or more frequently depending on bio-load. 

Breeding:

They are maternal mouthbrooders. The female lays eggs on flat rocks, then takes them into her mouth for 2–3 weeks.
