The Malawi eyebiter (Dimidiochromis compressiceps) is a predatory cichlid fish from Lake Malawi, known for its unique, laterally compressed, javelin-like body that helps it ambush prey, often targeting the eyes of smaller fish, though this specific behavior is debated in the wild. It's a popular but aggressive aquarium fish, with males developing bright colors, and it requires a high-protein diet.

Key Characteristics
Scientific Name: Dimidiochromis compressiceps
Habitat: Native to Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe, and the Shire River in East Africa.
Appearance: Has a very narrow, compressed body, making it almost invisible among plants. Males are more colorful (blue, red, orange) than silvery females.
Diet: Carnivorous, feeding on smaller fish. In captivity, it needs a high-protein diet of pellets, flakes, and frozen/live foods like brine shrimp.
Behavior: A predatory "hap" cichlid that can be aggressive and territorial, especially as it grows larger.
Hunting: Its name comes from its hunting style of ambushing prey from below and aiming for the eyes, though in the wild, it primarily swallows smaller fish whole.
In Aquariums
Compatibility: Best kept in large tanks with robust tank mates or in species-only tanks due to its aggressive nature.
Care: Requires a varied, high-protein diet and careful feeding to avoid overfeeding.
