Lwanda Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda OB") are vibrant Lake Malawi cichlids requiring a 55–75+ gallon tank, hard alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.5, temp 76–82°F), and a sandy, rocky setup with ample swimming space. They are mildly aggressive, best kept in all-male groups or with other Peacocks/Haps, and thrive on a varied diet of pellets and high-protein, frozen treats.
Tank Setup and Environment
Tank Size: 55 gallons is a minimum; 75+ gallons is recommended for active swimming.
Substrate: Fine sand is necessary, as they sift for food.
Decor: Use rocks and caves to create territory, but leave plenty of open space for swimming.
Water Conditions: Strict adherence to, or simulation of, hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5-8.5, hardness 10-20 dH).
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C).
Diet and Nutrition
Diet Type: Primarily carnivores, but need a varied diet.
Foods: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with high-protein foods like brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms.
Temperament and Tank Mates
Temperament: Generally peaceful to moderately aggressive compared to Mbuna. Males can be aggressive to other males of similar color.
Compatible Tank Mates: Other Lake Malawi Peacocks and Haps.
Avoid: Large, aggressive Mbuna, as they can outcompete Lwanda for food and territory.
Stocking Strategy: Often overstocked slightly to reduce territorial aggression.
Water Quality and Maintenance
Filtration: High-quality, robust filtration is required due to overstocking/high feeding.
Water Changes: 20–30% weekly water changes are necessary to keep nitrates low.
Sensitivity: Sensitive to poor water quality and fluctuating parameters.
Breeding
Method: Maternal mouthbrooders. The female holds eggs and fry in her mouth for roughly 3 weeks.
