Champsochromis caeruleus, commonly known as the Malawi Trout Cichlid, is a large, predatory cichlid from Lake Malawi, Africa, known for its torpedo-shaped body and vibrant blue males with long fins. It's a maternal mouthbrooder that feeds on smaller fish and is popular in the aquarium hobby for its striking appearance, though males can be aggressive towards each other.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Males are electric blue with yellow/orange scales and long, flowing dorsal and anal fins; females are less colorful, typically silver.
Size: Can grow up to 30-35 cm (12-14 inches).
Diet: Piscivorous (fish-eating) in the wild; requires a high-protein diet in captivity (e.g., pellets, shrimp, krill).
Habitat: Native to Lake Malawi, found in rocky and sandy areas.
Temperament: Generally peaceful with other species if they are too large to be eaten, but males can be very aggressive and territorial with each other.
Reproduction: Maternal mouthbrooder; the female holds the eggs and fry in her mouth until they are free-swimming.
Aquarium Care
Tank: Requires a large tank (75+ gallons) with ample swimming space, mimicking Lake Malawi's rocky/sandy environment.
Water: Prefers hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5-8.5) and temperatures of 23-28°C (74-80°F).
Tank Mates: Best kept with other large, non-aggressive cichlids that are too big to be swallowed.
