The One-and-a-half-stripe hap (Protomelas insignis) is a colorful African cichlid from Lake Malawi, known for its distinctive stripe pattern as a juvenile that fades in adults, which develop brilliant blue and gold colors, especially males. It's a territorial, rock-dwelling fish that is an egg-eater (oophagous) and requires a large aquarium with plenty of hiding spots to accommodate its aggressive and territorial nature, especially during breeding.

Key Characteristics

Scientific Name: Protomelas insignis

Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa

Appearance: Juveniles have a distinct stripe; mature males become bright blue, often with gold.

Size: Can reach up to 8-10 inches.

Diet: Omnivore, specifically an egg-eater (oophagous).

Temperament: Mildly to moderately aggressive and territorial, especially males.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: Needs a large tank with plenty of space to swim and rockwork for territory.

Tank Mates: Best kept with other similarly sized, peaceful African cichlids like other Haps and Peacocks (Aulonocara), but avoid Mbunas and smaller fish.

Water: Sensitive to fluctuations; requires stable water parameters.

Behavior: Males are territorial and may fight; a higher female-to-male ratio can help.
