The Gold Harbour Cichlid (Lethrinops sp. "Gold Harbour" or "Yellow Collar")
is a peaceful, sand-sifting mouthbrooder from Lake Malawi's Monkey Bay area. Famous for its stunning yellow-gold coloration in males, it is a shoaling haplochromine that requires hard, alkaline water, a fine sandy substrate, and a minimum 55-gallon aquarium.
Key Care Parameters
Scientific Name: Lethrinops sp.
Temperament: Peaceful; best kept in small groups with multiple females per male
Max Size: 5 to 6 inches (12-15 cm)
Temperature: 74°F to 84°F (23°C to 29°C)
Water Hardness: Hard pH Level: 7.8 to 8.6
Tank Setup & Diet
Substrate: Must include a fine sand substrate, as they are natural sand-sifters that spend time foraging along the bottom.
Aquascaping: Provide open swimming spaces along with rocky outcrops or caves for females to hide and retreat from dominant males.
Diet: Omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency. Feed them a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, brine shrimp, and other frozen, protein-rich foods.
Breeding : These fish are maternal mouthbrooders. The dominant males are polygamous and establish territories. After spawning, the female scoops the eggs into her mouth and carries them for several weeks until the fry are free-swimming.
