Appearance:
Coloration:
They have a distinctive pattern of dark, horizontal stripes and spots on a light background, providing excellent camouflage. Males, especially during breeding, display vibrant blue coloration with red markings.

Males can grow up to 25 centimeters (9.8 inches), while females reach around 20 centimeters (7.9 inches).
Body Shape:
Like other cichlids, they have an elongated body shape, well-suited for their predatory lifestyle.
Habitat and Temperament:
Origin: Native to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe in Africa.
Aquarium: They are often found in deeper, rocky and sandy areas of the lake.
Temperament: Fusco cichlids are known for being mildly aggressive and predatory, preferring to ambush smaller fish.
Tank Mates: They are best kept with similar-sized, non-aggressive fish or as a single male with a harem of females.
Care:
Diet:
They are piscivorous (fish-eating), so their diet should include meaty foods like smaller fish, but also can include flake or pellet food.
Water Parameters:
They prefer a pH of 7.4-8.4, hard water, and a temperature range of 74-84°F.
Tank Setup:
Aquariums should have plenty of open swimming space and rocky caves for hiding and territory.
Breeding:
Maternal Mouthbrooders:
Fusco cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female holds the fertilized eggs in her mouth for protection.
Spawning:
They readily spawn in aquariums, especially in species tanks with a male and several females.
