Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a small group of Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids. Larger tanks are better, especially for community setups.
Substrate:
A sandy substrate is preferred, as they like to sift through it.
Décor:
Provide plenty of rocks and caves for hiding and territory establishment, but also ensure ample open swimming space.
Filtration:
Strong filtration is crucial to maintain water quality, with a moderate to strong water flow.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C).
pH: 7.8-8.6, mimicking the alkaline conditions of Lake Malawi.
Hardness: Hard water with a hardness level of 4-6 dH is suitable.
Regular Water Changes: 20-30% weekly water changes are essential to maintain good water quality and keep nitrate levels low.
Diet:
Omnivorous:
They eat a variety of foods, including high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and some vegetable matter.
Feeding Frequency:
Feed once or twice a day, providing only what they can consume in a few minutes.
Tank Mates:
Suitable:
Other African cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as Mbunas or other Haplochromis species, are good choices. Some non-cichlids like Synodontis catfish, clown loaches, or other scavenger fish can also be suitable.
Avoid:
Smaller, peaceful community fish should be avoided, as they may be bullied or harassed.
Other Considerations:
Sexual Dimorphism:
Males are more colorful than females, and their color intensity can vary based on their rank in the tank.
Breeding:
They are mouthbrooders, with females holding the eggs in their mouths for several weeks.
Aggression:
While generally peaceful, aggression can increase during breeding or when establishing territories.
