The Deep-water hap (Placidochromis electra) is a popular, peaceful African cichlid from Lake Malawi, known for its vibrant blue coloration, especially in males, and its preference for deep, rocky, or sandy habitats. It's a carnivore that hunts for food in the sand and is a favorite in the aquarium trade for its beauty and relatively docile temperament compared to other haps, though it needs a spacious tank to thrive. 

Key Characteristics

Scientific Name: Placidochromis electra

Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa

Size: 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)

Color: Males develop striking electric blue with black bars; females are less colorful.

Temperament: Peaceful for a cichlid; suitable for community tanks with other peaceful haps and peacocks.

Diet: Carnivore; eats small invertebrates from the sand.

Habitat: Deep rocky areas and sandy substrates in Lake Malawi. 

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (208 liters) is recommended to prevent stress and aggression. 

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 74–84°F (23–29°C) 

pH: 7.4–8.6 

Hardness: Hard 

Tank Setup: Needs plenty of rocks for shelter and a sandy substrate for foraging. 

Tank Mates: Best kept with other peaceful cichlids like peacocks and other haps; avoid aggressive mbuna.
