The Malawi Hawk (Aristochromis christyi) is a large, predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, known for its specialized hunting technique of attacking mbuna and utaka from above, similar to a raptor. Growing to 10–12 inches, these territorial, carnivore fish require large aquariums (100+ gallons), hard alkaline water, and a diet of meaty,, high-protein foods.
Key Characteristics and Care
Appearance: They have a streamlined, laterally compressed body with a distinct, sharp-angled, wedge-shaped head designed to lunge into rocky crevices.
Behavior: Highly aggressive and predatory, they are best kept in large, species-only tanks or with other large, robust Malawi cichlids.
Tank Requirements: A minimum of 100-125 gallons is recommended for a single or small group, with plenty of open swimming space and rocky, sandy substrates.
Water Parameters: They require high-quality, stable water conditions: 76–82°F (23-28°C), pH 7.5–8.6, and high general hardness.
Diet: As natural piscivores, they eat small fish, but in captivity, they can be trained to accept carnivore pellets and frozen meaty foods.
Lifespan: Can live for 5 to 10 years with proper care.
