Buccochromis spectabilis

is a highly sought-after, predatory haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa. Renowned for its spectacular coloration, it features vibrant hues of blue, yellow, and green. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females carry fry, while dominant males become brightly colored and polygamous.

Common Names: Spectabilis, Malawi Butterfly, Spectacular Cichlid.

Habitat: Sandy and intermediate zones near the shores of Lake Malawi.

Temperament: Mildly aggressive with other territorial species. It is a piscivore (fish predator), meaning it should not be kept with smaller, bite-sized tank mates.

Aquarium Care Requirements

Tank Size: Requires massive enclosures—minimum 150 gallons for adults—due to their large size and swimming needs.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 74°F - 84°F (23°C - 28°C) pH: 7.4 - 8.5

Hardness: Hard water is preferred.

Diet: In captivity, they thrive on high-quality carnivorous cichlid flakes, pellets, frozen krill, and brine shrimp.

Size: Males can grow to large lengths (up to 9-10 inches), with females remaining slightly smaller and drabber in coloration.
