Buccochromis spectabilis
is a highly sought-after, predatory haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa. Renowned for its spectacular coloration, it features vibrant hues of blue, yellow, and green. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females carry fry, while dominant males become brightly colored and polygamous.
Common Names: Spectabilis, Malawi Butterfly, Spectacular Cichlid.
Habitat: Sandy and intermediate zones near the shores of Lake Malawi.
Temperament: Mildly aggressive with other territorial species. It is a piscivore (fish predator), meaning it should not be kept with smaller, bite-sized tank mates.
Aquarium Care Requirements
Tank Size: Requires massive enclosures—minimum 150 gallons for adults—due to their large size and swimming needs.
