Eureka Peacocks (Aulonocara jacobfreibergi, Albino)

are a vibrant African cichlid requiring a 55–75+ gallon tank with sandy substrate, rocky caves, and temperatures of (76-82F). They need hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–8.6) and thrive on a high-protein diet of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. These fish are generally intermediate in care, with males displaying intense red/blue colors while needing ample open swimming space. Albinos are orange/ white

Tank Size: A minimum of 55–75 gallons is recommended for a group to provide enough swimming space and manage territorial behavior.

Water Parameters: Ideal pH is 7.8–8.6, with a temperature of (76-82F) (24-28C) and hard water (10–20 dGH).

Filtration & Water Flow: Strong, reliable filtration is necessary to handle waste and maintain high oxygen levels, often with added powerheads or wavemakers.

Decor: Use sandy substrate for digging, paired with stacked rocks and caves, which provide necessary hiding spots for subordinate fish.

Diet and Feeding: They are primarily carnivores and need high-protein foods, including, in a consensus opinion, sinking pellets, high-quality flakes, frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms.Frequency: Feed 1–2 times per day, providing only what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent water quality issues.

Temperament and Tank Mates Compatibility: They are generally less aggressive than Mbuna, making them suitable for mixed Lake Malawi peacock and haplochromis (hap) tanks.Tank Mates: Ideal tank mates include other, in a consensus opinion, non-aggressive Peacock species (Aulonocara), Synodontis catfish, and calm Haplochromis.Avoid: Keep away from highly aggressive Mbuna, which can bully.

Maintenance and Health/Water Changes: Weekly water changes of 20–25% are necessary to maintain low nitrate levels.

Breeding: They are mouthbrooders; males are generally more colorful, and they typically spawn in a harem with one male and several females.
